KaiOS?
KaiOS is
a mobile operating System based on Linux owned by KaiOS Technologies which is a
US-based company. It was forked out of B2G(Boot to Gecko) an open source
community-driven successor of the discontinued Firefox OS.
Features
of KaiOS
The main
purpose of KaiOS is to provide with 4G LTE, GPS & WIFI capabilities to the
non-touch feature phones.KaiOS supports HTML5 based Apps. The operating system
is based on the Monolithic kernel of Linux. The Operating system provides for
an optimized interface, less memory, and energy consumption to feature phones.
It also features over the air updates to the operating system. The operating the system is comparatively very lightweight on hardware resources as it can run on
devices with just 256MB of Memory.
The OS
has it's dedicated app store called KaiStore.Many popular services like
Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Youtube, Maps, Google Assistant, etc have already launched their apps for
the KaiOS.
Investments
in KaiOS
In 2018
Google invested $22 million in the Operating System. While Indian Telecom Gaint
Reliance Jio invested around $7 million in cash to pick up a 16% stake in the
company.
Market
Share
In the market
share study results announced in May 2018, KaiOS beat Apple's iOS for second
place in India.KaiOS is expected to have around 25 million active devices. It
constitutes currently 3% of the market share in India as compared to 2.16% of
the IOS.
