Ever thought how would be the world's smallest camera and what kind of photos
will it click? In this article let's discuss the world's smallest camera by
OmniVision.
US Based
company Ominivision has developed the wold's smallest camera sensor. The
OmniVision OV6948 also holds a Guinness world record for the smallest camera to
be commercially available. The camera sensor is pretty tiny and measures just
0.575 x 0.575 x 0.232mm which is just like a grain of sand.

Quality
The camera delivers a 40,000 pixel(40kp) color image using an RGB Bayer Chip. The
OV6948 comes with a pixel size of 1.75 microns. The camera is capable of
capturing a 200 x 200 video at 30fps. The sensor delivers 1,000 mV/lux-sec
low-light sensitivity and uses the company’s in-house sensor technology
‘OmniBSI+ pixel’ to deliver quality images. The sensor can shoot a 120-degree
wide-angle view and gives a depth of field of the range up to 30mm. The company
claims OV6948 is the only ultra-small “chip on tip” camera which features
backside illumination. The sensor enables easy integration, with a 4-pin
interface and analog data output, capable of data transmission of up to 4
meters with minimal signal noise.
Possible Applications
Initially,
the camera sensor was developed for medical applications in an endoscope but
can be used for many other things like IoT devices, Wearables, Forensic
devices, etc.
