Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC Explained :-What's New?

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is the first processor to support 5G mobile network standard. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 has various improvements in terms of AI, Modem and many other things. It is the successor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 that is found in phones like Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Oneplus 6T. Oneplus 7 is expected to be the first phone to support 5G with the help of Snapdragon 855. Samsung Galaxy S10 is also expected to sport this processor.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Features and Improvements

The chip is the first to support the Qualcomm X50 5G Modem. The SoC also supports WIFI 6(also known as 802.11ax).

The SoC is manufactured on the TSMC's 7nm Lithography process compared to the 10nm on the Snapdragon 845.7nm process ensures good battery efficiency. In terms of performance, Snapdragon 855 is based on 8x Kryo 485 CPU cores that are 45% faster than the SD845. For gaming, it comes with an Adreno 640 GPU which will provide 20% faster performance. AI is also a major area where Snapdragon 855 has improved it comes with 4th-gen multi-core AI Engine which is supposed to be capable of performing 7 trillion operations per second. Perhaps more important is the new Hexagon 690 processor on the chipset, which includes a tensor accelerator and four vector extensions to double the vector processing prowess. AI tasks like facial recognition or context-based suggestions should be much faster on the Snapdragon 855. The SoC is clocked at a maximum speed of 2.84Ghz. The processor has a transistor count of 6,900,000,000 which is great considering the small size of the SoC.

In terms of photography, the Snapdragon 855 comes with Spectra 380ISP which is the world's first computer vision ISP and is up to 4 times power efficient. The Spectra 380 will also support video recording using the popular HDR10+ standard to capture more than 1 billion shades of color. h, and beyond all that, the Snapdragon 855 supports capture images from multiple cameras at the same time. The Snapdragon 855 also features hardware acceleration for the HEIF file format encoding, making files 50 percent smaller.

And the sheer horsepower available here means we'll start to see volumetric virtual reality (VR) immersive video experiences running at 120fps and at resolutions up to 8K. And all of the powerful stuff happens inside an area of 80mm2

Wrap Up!
Overall it is certainly a very powerful processor. The improvements in 5G are crucial for the evolution of a new smartphone age. We should expect this processor in almost all flagships of 2019 and it is certainly a right step in the right direction towards the 5G era.
