DNA Data storage has become a hot topic these days. It is the revolutionary technology that can store the whole internet in just a glass of water. So let's decode how does this technology works and how can it store the whole internet in a glass water.
What is DNA Data storage?
DNA digital data storage is defined as the process of encoding and decoding binary data to and from synthesized DNA strands. DNA molecules are genetic blueprints for living cells and organisms.
How does DNA Digital Data Storage Work?
DNA basically is used to recover characteristics of dinosaurs even today. What if we can store our data in DNA so that we are able to store our data and preserve our data for many years. So let's start from understanding the basics of DNA.DNA stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid. So in a DNA, we have four nucleotides in the sequence of ATGC((A) Adenine (T)Thymine (G)Guanine (C) Cytosine
Using these nucleotides we code the data, for example, we will code A as 1, T as 2, C as 3, G as 4 and so on. We compress the data code by using the lossless Huffman Coding Technique so that it is easy for us to store data on DNA.
An Artifical DNA sample is created using a DNA synthesizer which creates the base DNA where the data is coded using the ATCG sequence. After the data is coded the DNA can be stored for many years and also does not require electric supply. To restore the data we use a DNA sampler which decodes the data that has been stored in the form of DNA and we are able to access after processing.
How can we store the whole internet in a glass of water?
According to the experiment that was conducted in 2016 we will be able to store about
1 exabyte(10000000000GB/MM3) of data in a 1mm³ of DNA.If we talk about 1cm3
of DNA then we are able to store about 1 Zettabyte (1 trillion GB) of Data. According to a study the whole internet requires 15 Zettabyte of space to be stored. So if we store the data from the internet in DNA data storage technique it will require us just 15cm3 of space which is equal to the amount of space in a normal glass of water. According to the research we require 1KG of DNA to store all the information and Data that is present in the whole world(offline & Online Combined)

Scientists have been working on DNA data storage for many years. Successful test and experiments have been conducted in 2017 when Scientists were able to store data and easily recover from DNA. Let's hope that it turns into a reality where we will be able to store tons of data in a small space.
Disadvantages of DNA Data Storage
Cost:-The cost of storing and recovering the data from DNA is very high and cannot be used for day to day purposes
Speed:-The amount of time that we require to access the data is very high. And it takes a significant amount of time to encode the data on to the DNA.
