In our day to day lives whatever devices we use such as smartphone, computers ,TV all consist of processors.Processor is an integral part of all these electronics .So Let's have a look at the concept of processor binning that companies like Intel,Qualcomm use in manufacturing these processors.
Processor Binning Explained
So basically as we know we use processors for a lot of different electronics and thus processors are made on a mass scale.During the process of making processor we find that as the processors are very small in size and involve high level of industrial manufacturing .Also the fabrication is very hard .So as we make processors on a larger scale we can find out that all the processors that are being manufactured are not the same.So to explain it better let me give you an example.
For instance Intel is manufacturing Intel Core i7 processor on a mass scale but because the fabrication of chipset is quite hard we find some deformities in the batch and some processors do not fulfill the minimum requirements or performance that is required for a core i7 or in the process of fabrication if one of the core was not fabricated properly such that it does not function. So In such cases to get the best output from the processor we use processor binning where we can convert the same processor that we were using to make core i7 can now be converted into a lower end processor say core i5 or core i3 by disabling certain cores or certain functions in the processor and then this processor can be rebranded as core i5 or core i3 as per the minimum performance requirements.
This process helps in making best possible use of the processors. This Concept is used by companies like Intel,Qualcomm ,MediaTek etc.The same concept is also used while making pendrives or memory cards where if say we are manufacturing a 128GB memory card but due to the deformities it is not able to store 128GB of memory then we alter it so that it can store 64GB of memory.
I hope you have understood the concept of processor binning.
